January’s diet: low carb

For January, I picked a generic “low carb” diet based loosely around the site Diet Doctor which advocates a ketogenic diet, aiming for under 20g of carbs per day.  Broadly speaking the diet looks like this:

Good foods Bad foods
Vegetables which grow above ground (mushrooms, spinach,
aubergine, peppers, asparagus, lettuce …)
Cheese
Oils
Most nuts & seeds
Eggs
Meat
Fish
Tomatoes and avocados (yes i know these are technically fruit)
Vegetables which grow below the ground (potatoes, carrots, parsnips, onions, beetroot, …)
Grains and stuff made from grains
Rice
Pasta
Quite a lot of dairy
Fruit
Processed foods like sausages
Sugar and things containing sugar

Grey areas – as in give it a go but don’t overdo it – include some full-fat dairy, some pulses, blueberries and strawberries.

Alcohol would have been allowed in that “count it carefully” way, but I quite often take some time off the sauce in January so decided to abstain in the hope it’d kickstart the project.

So I ate a lot of vegetables. This diet is a direct descendant of the Atkins diet and so I thought I’d probably have to eat loads of meat, but with a bit of effort you can eat OK and veggie. You end up having lunches that look like this, which isn’t the end of the world.
